Media release

Nine in ten Australian investors concerned about Trump's trade policies — but half hold a steady course

Sydney (22 April 2025): A new national survey by leading investment platform InvestSMART reveals that while 88% of Australian investors are concerned about US trade policies under the Trump administration, many are resisting knee-jerk reactions — with one in five actively investing more during the volatility.

The survey, which gathered responses from more than 1,000 investors between 10 and 21 April, found that:

  • 88% of investors are concerned about US trade policies — with 57% "very concerned"
  • 50% have changed their investment strategy due to recent market volatility
  • 21% have increased their investment holdings to take advantage of opportunities
  • 75% believe Australia should not introduce retaliatory tariffs on US goods

Savvy investors seize opportunities despite volatility

Almost half (47%) of respondents identified as experienced investors, and their actions reflect a measured response to market swings triggered by recent tariff announcements. While 10% are watching closely and may adjust strategies, 47% have not changed their investment approach — highlighting a steady hand in turbulent times.

"Retail investors across Australia — and indeed globally — are facing uncharted waters," said Ron Hodge, CEO and Founder of InvestSMART.
"But it's encouraging to see many investors avoiding panic and even spotting opportunity, with one in five tipping more money into the market."

Majority oppose retaliatory tariffs

The research also found that three in four investors (74%) do not support introducing tariffs on US goods. While 39% said they need more information before deciding whether Australia should do more in response to foreign tariffs, only 28% supported stronger action.

Mr Hodge added:
"Australian investors are watching the global situation closely, but they're clearly cautious about any local response that could escalate tensions or harm the economy. These findings send a timely message to policymakers."

Survey snapshot

  • 21% have increased investments
  • 16% are holding off on new investments
  • 7% have sold assets to reduce risk
  • 6% have shifted to more conservative assets like cash or bonds
